Sacramento Gurudwara History

Brief history of our Gurdwara Sahib and sangat

Our ancestors, the founding members of this temple, migrated to the United States from India and worked tirelessly day and night. They had the courage and vision to bring the community together. Although the Gurdwara Sahib (temple) began its operations in 1989, it was officially inaugurated on September 27, 1992. The Gurdwara Sahib congregation began decorating Grand Nagar Kirtan in 2001, dedicated to the birth anniversary of Shri Guru Ravidass Ji. Grand Nagar Kirtan is scheduled to be decorated every year on the second Sunday of March. In 2026 the Nagar Kirtan was decorated on Sunday, March 8. Shri Guru Ravidass Temple Sacramento is located on 16th Street between I St. and G St. in Rio Linda, California. This temple serves as a religious and community center for followers of Shri Guru Ravidass Ji and Guru Granth Sahib Ji. It is known locally as a peaceful and welcoming place, with strong community involvement and events throughout the year.

There are other Shri Guru Ravidass temples in California—in the Bay Area, Pittsburg, Yuba City, Fresno, and Selma—but this Rio Linda (Sacramento) location is the primary one serving Sacramento. These temples are dedicated to Shri Guru Ravidass Ji and Guru Granth Sahib ideology and teachings (Bani). Shri Guru Ravidass Temple Sacramento members (congregation) are also dedicated to the ideology of the world-renowned human rights activist, great feminist, founder of modern India, father of the Indian Constitution, and legendary Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, commonly known as Babasaheb—a symbol of knowledge. We commemorate important days of Babu Mangu Ram Mugowalia, a great social reformer and freedom fighter (Gadri Baba), founder of the Ad-Dharm Mandal, who worked tirelessly to uplift the standard of living of the underprivileged.

Sacred Symbol

Har Nishan and Nishan Sahib

The Nishan Sahib, the holy triangular flag, stands high at the Gurughar with the Gurmukhi word “Har” embroidered on it. Har means the Divine presence pervading everywhere. The Har Nishan is a sacred symbol for Guru Ravidass followers and is seen at Guru Ravidass temples, on flags, head coverings, and during processions and religious gatherings.

ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ਭਇਓ ਉਜਿਆਰੋ ਭਵਨ ਸਗਲਾਰੇ॥

Your Name is the flame I light; it has illuminated the entire world.

  • The Har Nishan is changed twice a year, on Guru Ravidass Ji's Birth Anniversary and on the Gurughar foundation day.
  • The larger circle with forty rays represents the forty verses of Shri Guru Ravidass Ji in sixteen ragas within Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
  • The flame represents Naam, the divine word and light that illuminates the world.
  • The circle represents the universe contained and guided by God's order.
  • The word Har and the flame together represent Guru Ravidass Ji's teachings of devotion, dignity, equality, and spiritual light.
